CONKER Magazine is curated by survivors for survivors. They openly discuss mental health, gender, sexuality, race, body positivity and intersectional feminism.
Working closely with the editor-in-chief, I gathered quickly that CONKER's aesthetic is unbridled, wild feminine energy, presented in this bubbly, friendly casing - the cool older sister you go to with all your troubles.
Bold fonts juxtaposed by cursive handwritten subheadings, and the scrapbook-like approach to the layout of art and street photography, endeavoured to balance the wild and comfortable.
Competitor publications like Oh Comely and Frankie inspired the pastel colour blocking and format of text, as I wanted CONKER to feel settled amongst its sister magazines of a similar genre. For an individual spark and contemporary edge, I drew inspiration from imaginative editorial spreads, popularised Instagram quote graphics, and youthful Spotify campaigns.
This is the most ambitious magazine I have designed to date; it required for me to design 110 pages, all with a unique layout, and took around twenty days to complete.
